Technology
What is PECO Powersaver?
A passive energy-saving system built around the PECO Harmonic Energy Recycling Transformer. The complete system combines the transformer with Saving and By-pass power paths and integrated protection devices.
What is the Harmonic Energy Recycling Transformer?
A three-phase zig-zag autotransformer designed and manufactured in-house. A conventional passive autotransformer winds 96 turns and adds four to reach 100. PECO winds a full 100 and then adds four more, wound in reverse as a separate winding and tied to the main winding at both ends. The architecture is protected by Korean Patent No. 10-2546570.
Does PECO generate or recover energy?
No. PECO does not generate energy, and it is not a harmonic filter. The winding architecture was designed to place a series element in the distribution system without the resistive loss and heat that a series element normally brings. The name describes the design intent of the winding; it is not a claim that energy is created.
Is this the same as voltage optimisation?
PECO belongs to that general product category. It differs in design objective: minimising the loss and heat the device itself adds, rather than voltage step-down alone.
How is PECO different from a conventional passive system?
The conventional arrangement is one continuous winding — 96 turns plus four — with the step-down taken from a tap. PECO uses 100 turns plus four wound in reverse as a separate winding, tied at both ends. The step-down is the same 4 %, but more conductor is used and current density is lower. PECO also has nine zig-zag transition points where a conventional arrangement has six, and ships as a complete assembly with integrated protection and By-pass.
Does PECO reduce harmonics?
Reduction of fifth- and seventh-order harmonic current is characteristic of zig-zag energy-saving transformers generally, and PECO differs in degree rather than in kind. We do not publish harmonic reduction figures, and PECO is not offered as a harmonic filter. Where a facility has a specific harmonic requirement, it should be addressed with equipment designed for that purpose.
Is a PECO transformer heavier than a conventional one?
For the same rating, yes. More conductor is used, because the main winding is not asked to provide the step-down as well. Current density is lower as a result, and so is the resistance the device adds to the circuit. It was a deliberate design choice.
Is the system neutral connected to PECO?
No. PECO is connected as three-phase, three-wire. The system neutral bypasses the unit and connects directly to the distribution boards.
Why is the voltage difference fixed at 4 %?
It is the design condition for the transformer architecture. Output is approximately 96 % of input, without tap changing. The voltage difference is not, on its own, the explanation of the energy-saving result.
Does the voltage difference affect connected equipment?
For a nominal 400 V system the output remains within the supply voltage range permitted by EN 50160 and IEC 60038. Voltage range and equipment requirements are reviewed before any proposal.
Are there installations where PECO is not suitable?
Yes. It is not recommended where supply voltage already operates near the lower permitted limit, where tightly regulated constant-power electronic loads dominate, where operation is highly intermittent, or where the distribution arrangement cannot accommodate a series-connected device.
Operation, Protection and Maintenance
What is Saving Mode?
Power passes through the Harmonic Energy Recycling Transformer before being supplied to the load. This is the normal operating position.
What is By-pass Mode?
Power is supplied directly to the load without passing through the transformer — exactly as before installation.
What happens during an overload?
The EOCR monitors load current. When the preset overload condition is detected, its contact operates the control circuit, which commands the ATS to transfer the load to the By-pass path. This operates under load.
Can Saving and By-pass be switched at any time?
Deliberate transfer between the two positions is performed at no load, during a scheduled window. Automatic transfer to By-pass under an overload condition is a separate protective function and operates under load.
Is PECO an active monitoring or power-conditioning system?
No. The energy-saving function is performed passively by the transformer’s core and winding structure. The digital meter displays operating values but does not analyse or control the load.
Does PECO consume energy of its own?
Transformer efficiency is typically 99.8 % or higher, measured between 99.7 % and 99.83 % across models. Because the voltage difference is only 4 %, only a small fraction of throughput power is magnetically transformed — a 300 kVA unit uses a 180 kg transformer. Winding loss, core loss and heat are therefore low.
What maintenance is required?
Passive operation with no consumable parts and no software. Visual inspection, keeping the enclosure and ventilation clear, checking bolted joints, confirming the fan responds to its thermostat setting, and verifying input and output voltages. Intervals follow the facility’s own maintenance policy.
What is the warranty?
Three years on the Harmonic Energy Recycling Transformer and one year on switching and protection components, from the date of installation.
Measurement and Verification
How much energy will PECO save?
We do not publish a fixed saving percentage. Results depend on load composition, operating hours, phase balance and harmonic conditions. Savings are measured on site in accumulated kWh under agreed comparison conditions.
How should energy savings be evaluated?
In accumulated kWh at the metering point that determines the electricity bill, over comparable operating periods. Operating hours, load level, occupancy or production volume, ambient conditions and the measurement boundary must all be considered.
Can PECO’s effect be measured at the same site?
Yes. Because the system includes an automatic transfer switch, the facility can be operated alternately through the Saving and By-pass paths and compared on the same meter, without a modelled baseline. Transfers are performed at no load during scheduled windows.
Do you publish customer results?
No. Facility names, consumption data and verification reports belong to the customer. Reference information is provided only under a non-disclosure agreement.
Can verification reports support incentive applications?
In some markets customers have used verified savings documentation to support applications to national energy-efficiency incentive schemes. Eligibility, procedures and approval are determined solely by the relevant national authority.
Application and Project
Is PECO suitable for hotels?
Hotels typically operate continuous mixed loads — chillers, air handling, pumps, refrigeration, kitchens, laundry, lifts and lighting — together with a large population of single-phase electronic loads on guest floors. This suits the equipment well. Final suitability is confirmed by technical review.
How is the correct rating selected?
According to transformer rating, maximum load current, voltage, frequency and load composition. The PECO rating is normally matched to the rating of the facility transformer.
What does installation involve?
Series connection between the main circuit breaker and the sub-distribution boards, requiring a planned outage of the main distribution. Duration depends on cable and busbar work at the site and is estimated during technical review.
Which certifications does PECO hold?
An Attestation of Conformity issued by TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH under the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, tested to EN 62477-1, covering all 39 models from 100 to 3,000 kVA at 380–480 VAC. ATECELECTRIC holds ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and the winding architecture is protected by Korean Patent 10-2546570.
